But where can you go when you are feeling the need for a safe haven or an anchor as an international student? Casa Amalia is an initiative that provides exactly this: a home away from home. Located at Amaliastraat 10, in the city centre of The Hague, you are welcome to this house every Sunday evening between 5 and 10 pm.

Refreshed look for Initiatives of Change

Initiatives of Change (IofC) is pleased to announce the launch of their refreshed brand. In 2017, IofC’s global community guided by the international communications team looked how to best take the organization’s heritage into the future by refreshing the brand with the help of design agency ACW. The refreshed brand was launched on January 17, 2018, during the 50th anniversary celebration of Initiatives of Change’s centre in India: Asia Plateau in Panchgani.

Interfaith Conference 2017

Which borders do we experience, personally and in society, and how can we cross them? Around 150 people from different nationalities and beliefs – from Bahai, Hindu and Buddhist to the three monotheistic faiths – gathered to discuss these questions during the annual Interfaith Conference at the International Institute of Social Studies in the Hague on the 18th of November. The conference, that carried the theme Crossing borders, building bridges, was organised in collaboration with Initiatives of Change Netherlands and the student chaplaincy of The Hague Haastu.

Rudy van der Aar op de fiets tijdens zijn groene bedevaart naar Mekka

Two young Dutch Muslims cycled all the way from the Netherlands to Mecca on a wooden bike, to raise awareness about sustainability within the Islam. It was the result of a close friendship that started six years before at the international conference centre of Initiatives of Change in Caux. ‘With our trip we hope to inspire young Muslims in a practical and personal way.’

Kees Scheijgrond

At the age of 78 Kees Scheijgrond died in his hometown Gouda on 21 February. From 1995 until 2010 he was Chairman of the Dutch Foundation of Initiatives of Change (IofC-NL). He was the most 'active' chair IofC-NL has had. He took numerous initiatives, both in the Netherlands and further afield, to bring about the changes he wanted to see in the world.

Who are we and how should we live together? During the current election campaign in the Netherlands the issues of diversity and intercultural tensions play a key role. What can the Netherlands learn from the situation in Nigeria? This was the central question during the first filmnight in the series ‘African solutions for European problems’ in the centre of Initiatives of Change in the Hague.

Every month the International Student Chaplaincy Delft with chaplain Waltraut Stroh organizes an event called Global Meeting Point. The January one was organized together with Initiatives of Change (IofC) and shaped as a game. IofC trainer Christiaan Groen took the participants through a negotiation game. Salma Berrada, student of architecture at the TU in Delft, experienced it as ‘an incredible emotional journey within an evening time’. Read her personal reflection.

Silent Land

The documentary 'Silent Land: the fight for fair food' premiered in the presence of the two main characters on October 11th during a festive and well attended event in the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam, in the run-up to World Food Day. The world premiere was co-organised by Initiatives of Change Netherlands (IofC). Furthermore, IofC organised a special screening of the film on the 14th of October in a film theatre in The Hague.

Diana Damsa shares her personal story online after sharing it at the 'Living Peace: Celebrating 25 years of Creators of Peace' conference 2016. One of the insights that informs the approach of Creators of Peace is the awareness of the power of the story that every person, every woman lives out of, that shapes her world view, her values and relationships, that she passes on to her children and grandchildren. The stories that shape who we are and how we think. And we have the power to change the stories; from hurt to healing, from frozen to forgiving, from callousness to compassion.
