“A deeply touching and inspiring film. Very powerful and genuine.”

Negusu Aklilu, Director, Forum for Environment Addis Ababa

Initiatives of Change Netherlands organizes the film screening of Silent Snow on the 1st of October in the run-up to the public event about moral dilemma of food on World Food Day on Friday the 16th of October. We would like to invite you to this film screening and the conversation afterwards with filmmaker Jan van den Berg. In the subsequent conversation we aim to explore the relations between food, health and the environment together with you and hope to discover where we can make the difference in our own lives.

Silent Snow

Silent Snow is a powerful short film documenting the pollution that affects the Inuits of Greenland.  Via currents in the ocean dangerous pesticides like DDT (Persistent Organic Pollutants – POPs) reach the arctic where they accumulate in plankton, fish and bigger animals like seagulls and polar bears. Pesticides also travel through the air as they attach to snow and end up in the environment when the snow melts. In the documentary you follow the young Greenlandic woman Pipaluk Knudsen-Ostermann on her journey all around the world to find the local causes of the contamination that is quietly poisoning her people.  She meets the people behind the sources of pollution and discovers the heartbreaking dilemmas that lie at the heart of it. For example in Africa, where some people are looking for alternatives for DDT, however its grey poisonous clouds are a cheap way of saving lives in malaria prevention.
